The Science
How Moxi Laser Works
Moxi is a fractional, non-ablative laser using a 1927nm wavelength that targets water within skin cells rather than pigment or blood. Non-ablative means the treatment works beneath the surface without removing the epidermis — the outer skin layer stays intact. Fractional means the laser delivers energy in thousands of microscopic columns, leaving surrounding tissue untouched to speed healing.
Each microthermal zone triggers your body's natural repair process. Over the following days, treated cells — called MENDs (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) — rise to the surface and darken, sloughing off naturally between days 3 and 5 to reveal fresher, more evenly toned skin beneath. Full collagen remodeling continues for several weeks after treatment.
Moxi is not the right tool for deep scarring or significant skin laxity — for those concerns, a more aggressive resurfacing approach is appropriate. Moxi is the right choice for early sun damage, uneven tone, enlarged pores, and preventive "prejuvenation." For more on the underlying laser technology, see Sciton's Moxi device overview.

Your Moxi Treatment Plan
- Arrive with a clean face — no makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the treatment area.
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, and other active skincare for 3 to 5 days before your appointment.
- Skip tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks prior to treatment.
- Let us know about any cold sore history, recent Accutane use, or medications that increase sun sensitivity.
- Avoid blood thinners or high-dose aspirin before your session unless cleared by your physician, to reduce bruising risk.
- We'll apply a topical numbing cream and let it set for about 30 minutes before beginning.
- Once your skin is prepped, we'll provide protective eyewear and begin treatment with the Moxi handpiece.
- Your provider will assess your skin throughout the session and adjust as needed.
- After treatment, we'll apply hydrating serums and SPF to protect your skin.
- You'll go home with an aftercare kit to use over the next 7 to 10 days — most clients notice brighter, refreshed skin within about a week.
- Skin typically feels warm to the touch for a few hours after treatment.
- Some redness, swelling, sensitivity, or light bruising is normal and can last a few days.
- Ice packs or a cold compress can help with comfort immediately after your session.
- Wait 24 hours before applying makeup.
- Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy sweating for 24 hours.
- Don't pick or scratch at treated skin.
- Avoid tanning and direct sun exposure for two weeks after treatment.
- Skip saunas, hot tubs, and other heat exposure for 1 to 2 days.
- Within a few days, treated areas will darken slightly and feel rough — these are the MENDs (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) — and will flake off within about a week on the face and 1 to 2 weeks on the body.
- You'll go home with an aftercare kit to support healing over the next 7 to 10 days.
- Wait about an hour, or until your skin has cooled, before applying recovery lotion or SPF.
- Resume your normal skincare routine once skin no longer feels dry, rough, or tight — usually 7 to 10 days.
- The aftercare kit is designed for sensitive, healing skin. Prolonged use beyond the healing window isn't recommended for oily or acne-prone skin, as it can contribute to breakouts.
- Skip chemical or physical exfoliants and retinol for at least a week after treatment.
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, reapplying every two hours.
